Demand for many commodities fell sharply as manufacturers cut inventories when the credit crisis hit last year. Many users are starting to re-stock now, but China continued buying a number of commodities as prices fell, taking advantage of its strong financial position, in the certain knowledge that they will need these commodities to fuel domestic growth. This is just common sense, buying what they need when prices are low! Perhaps this has stopped prices being as weak as they might have been - but how short-sighted should investors be?
